"The dynamics of this collection as a whole lies in the successive negations and contrasts of pediods and styles. Colonial art appears to break away from native tradion merely to return to it, transformed into the syncretism of Latin American Baroque. Nineeteenth-century art would seem to distance itself from the legacies of both native and colonial art, at the same time aspiring to affirm its national roots and carve out a position for itself in cosmopolitan modernity. From the synthesis achieved in this way emerge two antitheses which are at the same time a return to the past and a projected future." Carlos Fuentes.
