A Note on the Catalogue

Şefik Atabey's Librarywas purchased in its entrietry by the current owner some years ago; to this was added a body of complemantary works independent to fill the very few gaps in the collection, many of which are also remarkable examples of distinguished provenance.

The present three-volume sale catalogue comprises teh entire Atabey library, arranged in alphabetical order, followed by a supplement (in volume 3) comprising the additional complementary works.

Sotheby's is of course greatly indebted to the work of Leonora Navari in her descriptive catalogue of the collection. The Ottoman World. The Şefik Atabey Collection (pub. Shapero, 1998 - see advertisement at end of vol. 3 for details) and indeed for her earlier work on the blackmer collection (sold in the rooms October 1989). It should however be noted that the lot numbers in this catalogue do not correspond to the numbers in Navari's catalogue of the collection. There are three indexes at the end of volume 3, as fallows; author(editor, etc.) anonymous works and topographical. The topographical index is intended as a guide and aid. It is not exhaustive and is not a guarantee of the content of a work. It is the responsibility of bidders to satisfy themselves as to the contents of all books.
