The developments from 1950 onwards constitute the final sections of the book: abstract expressionism, pop and pop art, minimal art, colour-field painting, and motion-and-light art. Provocative trends of the late 1960s - sculpture in place, earth works, performance, environmental art - were fully realized in the 1970s, and new trends - photo, realism, conceptualism - have taken root. In architecture, projected or recentyl built enterprises have been included, and a new chapter devoted to post-Modernism has been added.
Photography, not previously covered, is a new addition to this volume. Beginning with an 1837 photograph by Daguerre, it comes up to present-day photographic inventions and techniques, and investigates the phenomenon of photography in relation to developments in other arts.
Under the editorship of Daniel Wheeler, the entire volume has been throughly updated, including its comprehensive bibliography. More than 350 new illustrations enrich the text, further enhancing the value of this splendid volume. (Önsözden)
